The Opportunity

With the rise of multi-functional living spaces, there is a growing demand for versatile lighting solutions that allow customization of mood and ambience in interiors.

The Objective

Design with the adaptability to curate the lighting for a changing needs of a space, turning a single space from a cozy lounge or into a work from home office.

Finding Opportunity

Blend Utility and Aesthetics

How might we add versatility to living rooms/kitchen spaces through lighting?

How might we allow users to customize their lighting in ways beyond color temperature to meet their moods?

Ideation Sketches

Concept Development

Finding structural shades that lend to both mobility and aesthetics was the main goal when sketching and evaluating concepts: meeting the utility and aesthetics goal.

Development

Prototyping

First I explored sketch models, then I moved to cardboard laser cut patterns - varying spiral density for each iteration. Acrylic was the final material choice, requiring more prototypes to find the perfect springiness in form and function.

Engineering Design

To prove efficacy, I programmed motors that would raise and drop the light shade with a remote button control.

Presentation

The LIT Lighting Design Awards was created to recognize the efforts of talented international lighting product designers and lighting designers. The program celebrates creativity and innovation in the fields of lighting products and applications.

What I learned

Learning how to manage time between designing function vs. aesthetics was crucial for this project. I spent hours trying to make a working prototype when I really just needed to show proof of concept.
